Tramythia Excavation 1896
Excavation: Research excavation
Excavations began at the ancient city of Melos (Tramythia) in 1896 at an area between the villages of Klima, Trypete and Plaka. Various areas were explored - walls, gate, stadium, theatre, an elaborate mosaic floor in a cult building as well as later Byzantine churches. Due to both the excessive amount of disturbed ground due to ploughing in some areas and the excessive amount fill to be removed in others, the site was not considered for further extensive excavation. Results were published in a series of articles in the Annual of the British School at Athens.
