Kynosarges Excavation 1896-1897: Season 1896
Excavation: Research excavation
Most of the excavation of the site was conducted during this first spring season. Uncovered was a Roman building that had been converted into a Byzantine church. A large public building, most likely the Gymnasium, was found below the church possibly dating to the 6th century BC. In an adjacent field was a large Roman building, possibly a stoa or more likely a bath house. A number of Geometric tombs were also found below the floor of this bath house.
