Phylakopi Excavation 1896-1899: Season 1897
Excavation: Research excavation
Various difficulties were encountered during this season of excavation at Phylakopi, first by travel disruptions to the island due to the Greco-Turkish war of 1897. Additionally, the change of Antiquities Law at the beginning of 1897 required the purchase of the land on which the site was located further delaying the work. While waiting to excavate at Phylakopi, three British School Students who had arrived on the island (Crowfoot, Edgar and West) were dispatched to various parts of the island to conduct test excavations (respectively Demarch's Field at Tramythia, Pelos and Petralonia). Excavation at Phylakopi eventually resumed in early in May and carried on for another month. A good portion of the walled prehistoric town was uncovered and a plan made of the site. The site revealed a series of structures within fortification walls where at least two periods of construction were detected.
