Palaikastro Excavation 1902-1906: Season 1902
Excavation: Research excavation
The first season of work conducted by the Brirish School at Athens consisted of exploratory excavations in a number of locations. The tabletop hill of Kastri was investigated and excavations revealed a late Mycenaen settlement. To the south of Kastri, on the cliffside, a large 'Mycenaean' house was excavated (House A) which showed evidence for an earlier house below. Remains of other houses were also traced here. However, it was in the plain of Palaikastro, at a location known as Roussolakkos, that proved to be the location of a significant Bronze Age settlement. Here a substantial building (House B) was excavated, an L-shaped megaron with a courtyard and lustral basin and staircases. Numerous vases, inscribed tablets (Linear A) similar to that found at Knossos and other finds were located here. Various cemeteries were also investigated: pre-'Mycenaean', 'Kamares' graves in the gravel ridge to the south and a 'bone enclosure' further south; larnax burials in the bank of the river bed to the north (Salandri) more larnax burials on the cliff side; and a late 'Mycenaean' beehive style tomb near the village of Angathia.
