Chios: Ano Phana (Managros) study season 2001

Assessment and Analysis: Study season

In June and July, a study season was held on the pottery from the Managros/Ano Phana district of SW Chios, collected in 1999 in the programme of collaborative fieldwalking between the 3rd EBA and the School. Study of the material was conducted by Dr Beaumont, T. Vionis and M. Pisani. Study focussed on material collected from findspots XF5 and XF9, and Areas T and U. Findspot XF5 is delineated by a large built structure marking the centre of XF9. Geophysical testing had found this to be a large rectangular construction, approximately 12 x 24m. About 70% of the ceramic material is coarse ware including tiles, probably post-Late Roman, and 30% is semi-coarse to fine pottery of Archaic to Roman date. Pottery from the wider surrounding area of XF9 proved to be very mixed indeed, ranging from Archaic and Classical to the Early Modern period. Ancient material, however, was not plentiful. The periods predominantly represented seem to be the Middle/Late Byzantine and Ottoman of the 12th to early 15th centuries. Ceramic material from Areas T and U was almost all coarse wares, mainly amphorae. The principal periods seem to be the Hellenistic and Roman to Late Roman. Classical is very limited. Thanks are due to the Ephor and staff of the 3rd EBA.
