Kythera Island Project (KIP) study season 2003
Assessment and Analysis: Study season
Kythera Island Project enjoyed an exceptionally successful and fruitful study season in 2003, after the cessation of its archaeological fieldwork the previous year. Work on the survey pottery (Broodbank, Johnston, Kaldeli, Kiriatzi, Pickersgill, Stellatou and Vroom), concentrated on tract material, in order to gain a more complete diachronic understanding of distributions, but a start was also made on the in-depth analysis of Roman site material, refinement of Neolithic/Early Bronze Age dating (with assistance from A. Mari) and a final check was made on the date-lines for all sites, prior to full recording. The pottery from select levels of the 1960s Kastri excavations was restudied, with an emphasis on the Neolithic/Early Bronze Age (Kiriatzi and Broodbank) and the Neopalatial to Late Bronze III (Dickinson, Hatzaki and Rutter). Study of the lithics was completed to publication readiness by T. Carter (chipped stone) and T. Gerousi (ground stone). T. Zianni, supervised by T. Rehren, analysed samples of metal artefacts and metallurgical material from the 1960s excavations at Kastri. Research using the project's GIS was undertaken by A. Bevan and J. Conolly, the former (with D. Harlan) has constructed a website for the project. Archival and historical work (Bennet, Davies and Harlan) also continued, and J. Moody and O. Rackham completed their final botanical field season. In addition, preliminary processing and/or inputting of data were undertaken by C. Briault, C. Glatz, J. Hillditch, E. Kartsonaki and M. Mina, and drawing by O. Exarchou, M. Milic and M. Nikiforidou. Thanks go to the relevant archaeological authorities in Greece for their continued support. As from 2003, E. Kiriatzi (Fitch Laboratory Director) joins C. Broodbank as co-director of Kythera Island Project.
Active in 2002.
