Kythera Island Project (KIP) study season 2007
Assessment and Analysis: Study season
Kythera Island Project had a very successful six week study season. Study by Kathleen Slane of the Roman pottery from surface collection on Kastri has started to shed light on the volatile fortunes of the site and its shifting trade connections during this penod. Meanwhile further pottery recording by C. Broodbank, E. Kiriatzi, A. Johnston and J. Vroom concentrated on the completion of almost all the 47 sites in Paliopolis, which now comprises one of the most intensively investigated coastal landscapes in the Mediterranean. Data entry was undertaken by Ira Schiff and Stephanie Smith and GIS analysis by Varina Delrieu; over 600 pottey drawings have also been digitally processed in preparation for publication. Analysis by E. Kiriatzi and M. Georgakopoulou at the Fitch Laboratory of ceramic and metallurgical samples from KIP is ongoing, and N. Krahtopoulou and C. Frederick finished their publication of geoarchaeological sections with evidence of ancient terracing. Archival research on Kythera was conducted by J. Bennet, S. Davies and D. Harlan; one focus was on 18th century landholding patterns at Strapodi, in conjunction with toponym location by J. Bennet and E. Kiriatzi through interviews with local informants. In addition, KlP collaborated with Conservation Without Frontiers (organised by M. Smirniou and C. Pohl, and assisted by S. Naidorf) in the conservation and re-packing (the latter also undertaken by J. Cutler) of most of the 1960s excavation material from Kastri. This has stabilised the condition of the material and its documentation so that it will be available for future scholars.
