Kouphovouno project: study season 2006
Assessment and Analysis: Study season
The study season concentrated in particular on the drafting of the narratives of the excavations in Areas B, C, G and H, on study of the pottery and 'small finds', study of the pottery fabrics, on working up excavation plans on Adobe Illustrator and on database work. In collaboration with the Greek Archaeological Service measures were taken for the long-term conservation of the site. Basic descriptions and interpretations have now been drafted of the stratigraphic sequences, archaeological features, sediments and finds in each of Areas 8, C, G and H. All of the 2003, 2005 and some of the 2006 contexts, 337 in total with 18,962 registered sherds, were processed with a view to completing this phase of the study in 2008 when the 2001 and 2002 finds will also be available again. Dr I. K. Whitbread has been able to clarify the main fabrics used and has selected 130 samples which will be thin-sectioned for petrographic analysis in the School's Fitch Laboratory. Jean Cantuel brought the initial stage of identification and classification of the animal bones to completion. In addition to the work carried out during the formal study season in Greece progress has also been made on a number of the specialist studies. At the University of Liverpool funds have been granted for a pilot on the physical, chemical and lipid analysis of a number of our soil samples. A report has been drafted on the hydrographic study of the environs of Kouphovouno by Eric Fouache and Claude Cosandey, and initial results have been forwarded to us from Christele Ballut's micromorphological analysis ofsamples from the excavation.
