Lefkandi-Xeropolis study season 2005
Assessment and Analysis: Study season
The director of the excavation, Dr I. S. Lemos (Oxford University) reports that the project which is funded by the Packard Humanities Institute had the full support and collaboration of the IA Ephoreia of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities at Chalcis under the directorship of Mrs. Amalia Karapaschalidou. A priority this year was to understand the ancient landscape of the area. To this end, a geoarchaeological project and a geophysical investigation were undertaken. The second objective was to complete an intensive study of the excavations conducted in 2003 and 2004. Finally a rigorous study season was also conducted this year. It incorporated a number of projects: design and application of a data-base for the archaeological context (including excavation and architectural units, finds, environmental and other related information); design of a data-base for recording pottery units and their fabric; conservation of pottery and small finds from the excavations of 2003, 2004, and 2005; drawing of pottery and other finds and finally sorting of the residue material recovered from the soil flotation process in these excavations. In addition a number of areas excavated previously were studied in order to understand their stratigraphy and chronology.
Active in 2005.
