Kritsana Excavation 1929
Excavation: Research excavation
The Toumba of Kritsana, on the west coast of Chalkidike was excavated by W.A. Heurtley, Assistant Director of the British School at Athens, in 1929. It consisted almost entirely of an early Bronze Age deposit. Black-polished Anatolian class pottery was the rule, but at the lowest levels there was some painted Neolithic pottery similar to some Thessalian ware (Wace's B3a and B1 categories). Heurtley inferred that the earlier Neolithic population, as at the nearby Hagios Mamas, were displaced by the arrival of Anatolian settlers.
Active from 11/03/1929 to 13/04/1929.
