The Olynthos Project Excavation 2014-2019
The aim of the excavation was to explore the residential units that were indicated within the geophysical survey. Modern scientific techniques designed to reveal the organisation of domestic activity and aspects of the domestic economy were also used within the excavation. This provided exciting new evidence for beginning to study separately the uses of the upper and lower storey rooms in a Classical house. Three small test trenches were located to investigate various anomalies detected by geophysical survey. All three revealed that the upper deposits on the South Hill are deeper and more mixed than those on the North Hill, with evidence of fourth-century bc occupation, plus residual finds of sixth-century bc date, and possibly earlier. Continued excavation of House B ix 6 showed that its poorly preserved southeast corner had two occupation phases. Under the paved road a clay-like deposit comprising collapsed architectural material, mudbricks, pottery, shells and fragments of bone extended below these contexts, and when this deposit was removed a semicircular ash-like deposit came to light, an installation or hearth, dating to the Archaic period, before the Persian destruction.
Active from 2014 to 2019.
