The Olynthos Project Geophysical Survey 2014-2019
The geophysical survey was conducted to locate areas for excavation and to devise appropriate methodology for investigating and mapping buried remains. Data were collected both inside and outside the known city area in order to define the extent of past activity and observe differences between on- and off-site measurements. In July a three-dimensional optical mapping project was completed, which was used to construct a preliminary digital elevation model (DEM), and is currently being used to prepare a new site plan, which will now form the basis for all of the project’s GIS models. It was determined that most of the North hill was covered with a gridpattern of streets which was determined to stretch over most of the surveyable hill. Magnetometry survey west of the northern part of the North Hill located a group of small, strong anomalies. These appear to represent graves, possibly a continuation of Robinson’s ‘Riverside Cemetery’, suggesting that this area lies beyond the boundary of the ancient city.
Active from 2014 to 2019.
