Kouklia (ancient Palaepaphos), the site of the famous temple of Cypriot Aphordite, was excavated at the beginning of 1888 under the direction of E.A. Gardner, Director of the British School at Athens. Gardner excavated the site with the assistance of D.G. Hogarth, M.R. James and the architect R. Elsey Smith. Remains of the sanctuary were explored, discovering numerous inscriptions and tombs.
