Limniti Excavation 1889
Excavation: Research excavation
In 1889 by the British School at Athens excavated a site in the Limniti area. The valley had been surveyed the previous year by D.G. Hogarth, and the was know to have produced many terracottas, some of which were quite large, from illicit excavations. There was evidence of a number of sites in the area, but at a place called Mersineri several trenches were excavated. They yielded pottery, terracottas, bronze statuettes, rough stone walls. The site, described as a local 'grove-shrine', was deemed to be predominently 4th century BC in date and not earlier than 450 BC.
Active from 23/04/1889 to 28/04/1889.
