Methana Survey 1982-1987

The goal of the surveys varied but in the 1984 season, attention focused on the cultivated terraces around Megalochori and Kamenochori in the west and Kypseli, A Theodoroi, Kounoupitsa and Ayios Nikolaos in the east and north. The goal of the third season was to make close studies of the three main Classical sites of Palaiokastro (Ancient Methana), Oga and Magoula. Evidenced was expansion of Palaiokastro in the Archaic period while Oga and Magoula had declined in Classical times. A study of the coastal terrace system was also completed. An impressive succession of fortifications was also recorded at the Isthmus, the earliest of the 5th century BC, the latest of the War of Independence. Mr Th. Koukoulis began a study of the Byzantine churches and Mediaeval sites. On Methana Peter James and Gary Taylor investigated the effects of erosion on sites of different periods. It was discovered that the chronology of the site went from Early Helladic to Medieval. What was taken from the studies was that the School's interpretation of the chronological range and function of sites was refined rather than radically revised.

Active from 1982 to 1987.
