Geraki Excavation 1905
At Geronthrae, the modern Geraki, on the Eastern margin of the Eurotas basin, F.W. Hasluck and A.J.B. Wace conducted experimental work on the ancient Acropolis on behalf of the British School at Athens. As at Thalamai, the Hellenic remains had been used as a quarry by Frankish and later builders, and there is nothing to justify a large excavation. An interesting settlement of the early Bronze Age was located, a grave containing geometric pottery was opened, and some inscriptions found. Publication of the excavations and a remarkable series of archaic marble sculptures collected by the mayor of Geraki appeared promptly in the Annual of the British School at Athens. The pottery was later published by Wace in the Annual of the British School at Athens.
Active from 26 May 2005 to 06 Jun 2005.
