Emporio Excavation 1952-1955: Season 1953
Excavation: Research excavation
New Trenches were dug on the slopes of the settlement's acropolis where it projects into the sea. They revealed houses with rectangular rooms and a destruction layer by burning preserved several richly decorated vases. There was no detection of undisturbed middle or late Bronze age habitation, but a late Bronze age vessel suggests continued habitation. A Roman fortress and christian basilica were found nearby, as well as an Archaic city on Mounth Prophetes Elias. Further excavation at the purported site of Delphinion was planned for later that year.
Active from /06/1953 to 1953.
