Agrileza Excavation 1977-1983: Season 1983
Excavation: Research excavation
A fifth season of excavation at the Athenian silver-mine site at Agrileza in the Laurion hills was directed by J. Ellis Jones. Six weeks of work on the site were followed by two weeks' preliminary study of the material at Laurion Museum. On site, the plan of the terraced, rectangular (45 x 50m. overall) works-compound of Washery C was completed with the clearance of two rooms and a corridor-entry in the South Court, and the completion of work in two rooms of the North Court. Also in the North Court itself, a great pit was definitely identified as a collapsed bottle-cistern (its 'well-head' was found fallen nearly as far down as the cemented shoulders, below the fragmented shaft). Further north, a better preserved cemented cistern shaft was cleared; six metres deep and straight, it was connected by a horizontal tunnel, two metres high and eight metres long, to a large round cistern in the north-west corner room. A narrow stair case entering the washery's main reservoir was also part-cleared. Sherd material agreed with the 4th century BC date already proposed. Nearby, Washery A was re-cleaned for planning purposes.
Active from /06/1983 to /09/1983.
