Lianokladi Excavation 1909
At the site of Lianokladi in the Spercheus Velley A.J.B. Wace and M.S. Thompson, members of the British School at Athens, cut deep shafts across the mound to the level of the virgin soil. They found three well-marked strata, in the lowest of which were sherds of the 'red and white' ware akin to, though of finer style than that which has been found in Thessaly and Phocis, dating to the Neolithic. In the stratum above this the pottery changes completely and is of the 'black lustre' style similar to that found at Orchomenos. The pottery of the third and topmost stratum was of a type hitherto unknown, a reddishbrown hand-made ware with black geometric patterning, which the excavators believe are contemporaneous with Late Minoan III. There was no architecture found in the lower two strata, but a house with different phases of construction was found in the upper stratum. Two cist tombs were also found in the upper statum, at a level higher than the house.
Active in Jun 1909.
