Ithaca Excavation 1930-1934: Season 1931
Excavation: Research excavation
Aetos: Trial pits were sunk in the neighbourhood of the chapel of St. George, and on both sides of the saddle, principally on the northern. Foundations of a Hellenic sanctuary were uncovered just south of the chapel; the Hellenic tower lying some 30 m. to the north was cleared; tests were made at various points of the Hellenic walls, both on the summit of Aet6s and on the slopes. In the trial pits to the south of the chapel, derivative Mycenaean and proto-Geometric pottery as well as proto-Corinthian began to appear, associated with a terrace wall, of which, however, only a preliminary examination was possible. At Pisaeto, a fine piece of Hellenic wall, evidently part of the habour-works, was found and partly un- covered.
Active in 1931.
