Tocra Survey 1966-1967: Season 1967
Survey: Architectural survey
The tacheometric survey of the city wall was completed and at least the outlines of the insulae and of almost all the individual buildings and other identifiable features within the walls were plotted. In addition, detailed plans were made of the West Church and of the excavated East Gate, Byzantine baths, late Byzantine 'palace' and East Church, while the extramural West Church and another seven of the 31 towers on the city-wall were sketchplanned. The three gates and all the towers, except one underlying the TurcoItalian castle, have now been surveyed. Further and closer study of the defences indicates three periods, not two as has previously been asserted, which may provisionally and broadly be described as Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine.
Active in 1967.
