Megalopolis Survey 1981-1983: Season 1983
Survey: Systematic fieldwalking survey
Under the direction of Drs J. A. Lloyd, E. J. Owens and J. Roy, a team from University College, Swansea, and Sheffield University continued the programme of fieldwalking in Megalopolitan territory begun in 1981. c. 12 km1 were surveyed around the modern villages Ekklisoula, Trilofo and Pavlia, and c. S km1 in the territory of modern Stemnitsa, Zigovitsi, and Dhimitsana. The latter area, in or near the valley of the R. Lusios, produced very little material; but the Ekklisula - Trilofo - Pavlia area produced material comparable in quantity and date to the finds from 1981 and 1982. All periods from pre-historic to modern were represented; but finds from the classical Greek and Hellenistic periods were most frequent, and were distributed in such a way as to suggest considerable dispersed rural settlement. Fieldwork for the survey having been completed in 1983, a team of 4 people visited Megalopolis in late August and September 1984 and completed the recording and study of the survey' s finds, now lodged in Megalopolis museum, besides carrying out complementary research in Athens. Work for the survey in Greece has now been concluded, and preparations are being made for the publication of the survey's findings.
Active in 1983.
