Palaikastro Excavation 1902-1906: Season 1906
Excavation: Research excavation
A small supplementary excavation by the British School at Athens was undertaken by Mr. Dawkins, accompanied by Mr. Droop, in March 1906. A few days spent in the sinking of trial trenches and pits on the slopes of Petsofa in the hopes of finding Late Minoan I or II burials near where larnkes were found in 1905. However, traces of a Late Minoan I or II house was located. A cave on the slope of Petsofa was also explored, yeilding reintered bones with Late Minoan III pottery fragments, and in the furthest recesses of the cave were found three clay larnakes filled with skulls, loose bones, and pottery also belonging to the Late Minoan III period. Another cave at a place called Plako, southeast of the neighbourhood of Petsofa, contained earth filled with a quantity of bones and sherds, dating to the Late Minoan II period. The last three days of excavation were spent digging trial pits on the lower slopes of Kastri, with no results.
Active in Mar 1906.
