Pelos excavation 1897
Evaluation: Trials
In 1897, in the second season of the Melos Campaign (1896-1899), C.C. Edgar excavated an early cemetery at the site of Pelos near Phylakopi. It was one of three small test excavations conducted by students of the British School at Athens while awaiting confirmation that work might begin at Phylakopi. The site had been noted by Duncan Mackenzie during the course of his island-wide survey in 1896. According to Edgar's published report, some of the burials had been looted and the local farmer who owned the land possessed numerous Cycladic pots that, in all likelihood, came from the burials. The excavation was terminated on 18 May by the orders of the General Ephor of Antiquities due to the change in Antiquities Law at the beginning of 1897.
Active from /05/1897 to 18/05/1897.
