Chios: Latin Monuments 1907-1909
During an expedition in 1907 to the island of Chios F.W. Hasluck, Assistant Director of the British School at Athens, discovered some Latin inscriptions, fragments of armorial sculpture and bas-reliefs probably of the 15th century A.D. Her returned the following year to conduct a more detailed survey of Latin remains on the island with a brief follow-up in 1909. This study resulted in his publication of the Latin monuments that dated chiefly from the period of the second Genoese occupation (1346-1566), during which Chios was governed by a Genoese mercantile company controlled to some extent by the government of Genoa. Hasluck covered the main fortress of Chios town, inscriptions, carved shields and reliefs, and architectural details on churches and other structures in the vicinity.
Active from 1907 to 1909.
