Aetolia Topographic Survey 1892-1893
Assessment and Analysis: Landscape survey
During the years 1892 and 1893, W.J. Woodhouse, Craven Fellow at the British School at Athens, explored the topography of Aetolia, following the tenants of William Ramsay who wrote that “Topography is the foundation of history.” In his survey of the area, Woodhouse built on Leake's observations. He combined a study of the geography and topography to understand the placement of sites, fortifications and routes in the region - more than a simple list of sites visited and conjectures on their ancient names.
Active from 1892 to 1893.
