Macedonian Mounds Survey 1924-1925: Season 1924

Survey: Field survey

In 1924, the British School at Athens Assistant Director, W.A. Heurtley and British School student, W. Cuttle surveyed a number of mounds in West Chalkidiki, many of which had been observed by previous scholars such as A.J.B. Wace and M.S. Thompson in 1909-1911 and Leon Rey during WWI. As a consequence, they retained the numbering system begun by Rey and by Wace and Thompson. In the light of these earlier studies and from Heurtley's own excavations at Vardino and Vardaroftsa, they classified the pottery found as pre-Mycenaean, Mycenaean and contemporary, post-Mycenaean and local Geometric followed by Hellenic and Hellenistic. The frequency of the black on red ware similar to Thessalian Neolithic suggests links with Thessaly. Also noteworthy was the almost complete absence of certain Iron Age types which characterise the Vardar valley to the north.

Active from 16/12/1924 to 1924.
