Prehistoric Mounds in Thessaly & Spercheios Valley 1908-1910
In 1908, just prior to the excavation at Zerelia, J.P. Droop and A.J.B. Wace travelled to Thessaly and parts of Central Greece to look for evidence of prehistoric mounds, a process they referred to as 'Magoula Hunting'. Droop defined the process of magoula hunting in his 1915 book on archaeological methodology in Greece as the identification of the gentle swelling mounds in the landscape which were a result of gradual accumulation of debris from human habitations. Together with M.S. Thompson, Wace continued the search for mounds in between a series of excavations he and Thompson conducted 1909-1910. The search intensified in 1910 when they began to systematically collect data for a topographic study which was published in the 1911 Geographical Journal. In 1912 they published their book, Prehistoric Thessaly, where they identified and numbered 115 sites, continuing the numbering sequence started by the Greek archaeologist, Chistos Tsountas.
