Prehistoric Mounds in Macedonia 1909-1911
Survey: Field survey
In 1909 and later in 1911, A.J.B. Wace and M.S. Thompson travelled to Macedonia to investigate prehistoric mounds, building on their previous work in Thessaly. In 1909 they were in Central Macedonia near Thessaloniki and the Chalkidiki. The trip in 1911 provided more observations as well as supplementary data on the mounds they had investigated in 1909. In 1909, they visited numerous mounds or toumbas in the Salonica district in which they classified as Funerary tumuli (A1 to A34), Prehistoric settlements (B1 to B26), and Greek town sites (C1 to C10). In 1911 they refined their original observations of the site of Servia (Serfije), located in the Haliacmon valley of Western Macedonia. At all of these sites, they determined that some of the pottery was similar to that of Thessaly, demonstrating cultural connections to the south.
