Vlachs in Macedonia 1911
Assessment and Analysis: Thematic survey
In the summer of 1911, A.J.B. Wace and M.S. Thompson, along with their survey of ancient Macedonian mounds, conducted an ethnographic and philological study of nomadic peoples of northern Greece. They concentrated their efforts among the Vlachs of Samarina in Western Macedonia. They observed local customs revolving around rites of passage, transhumance practises, costumes, festivals and folklore as well as a study of the Vlach language. They published their observations in 1914, The Nomads of the Balkans.
