Phylakopi Excavation 1974-1977
The 1974-1977 Phylakopi excavations aimed to continue the work undertaken at the site in 1896-1899 by D. Mackenzie and others and then in 1911 by R. M. Dawkins and J. P. Droop. The goals for these excavations changed with the discovery of finds each season but they included: 1. Further investigation of the stratigraphy of the site 2. Completion of the stratigraphic sounding and investigation into the Mycenaean palace area 3. Further investigation of the Mycenaean shrine and associated structures discovered in the 1974 and 1975 excavation seasons. The Megaron complex was excavated and a shrine was discovered. Most of the layers and structures dated to the Bronze Age, specifically, the LH IIIA and B, LM IA and B phases. Finds ranging from animal and human figurines, pottery, Minoan Linear A script on clay tablets, a mask beaten in gold and a rock crystal seal stone with a running goat were amongst the wide range of objects recovered in across the excavations were discovered.
Active from 1974 to 1977.
