Assiros Toumba Excavation 1975-1980
The aim of this excavation was to investigate the prehistoric Tell settlement. Between six and eight successive buildings were excavated, four of which were destroyed by fire. A score of complete vessels were found on the destruction floors. Evidence of imported as well as locally produced Mycenean pottery was found as well as persistantly made local Macedonian pottery. A study of the soils was undertaken in the vicinity of Assiros demonstrating that there has been considerable deposition on the site around the Toumba since the site was abandoned. A range of seeds were found within one of the burnt buildings including almost pure deposits of wheat, barley and millet.
Active from 1975 to 1980.
